Kazuya Ishida's Bizen pottery

Kazuya Ishida was born in Bizen City and entered his family’s tradition of Bizen pottery. He studied under Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure, and later moved to the UK to further his studies in ceramics.

He creates works using traditional English slipware techniques and his original method “Raho,” combining natural forms with the spirit of Bizen pottery.

He has been invited as a lead artist for the Oxford Anagama Project (University of Oxford), and has also expanded his activities to the United States. In recent years, he has begun sourcing his own clay to create works using natural materials.

Blending tradition and innovation, he continues to work as a ceramic artist active internationally.

Bizen ware is a traditional Japanese pottery from Bizen City, Okayama. It is fired without glaze, creating a natural and unique texture shaped by fire and ash. It has a history of about 1,000 years and is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.
